McArdle Pharmacy

If you're planning to travel outside the UK, you may need to be vaccinated against some of the serious diseases found in other parts of the world.

Vaccinations are available to protect you against infections such as yellow fever, typhoidandhepatitis A.

In the UK, the childhood vaccination programme protects you against a number of diseases, but doesn't cover most of the infectious diseases found overseas.

You will have to plan ahead and consult us at least 8 weeks before your departure date. Whatever your requirements, our pharmacist is here to help you.

Please call to book an appointment.

MALARIA:

There is a significantrisk of getting malaria if you travel to an affected area. It is very important you take precautions to prevent the disease.

There's currently no vaccine available that offers protection against malaria, so it's very important to take antimalarial medication to reduce your chances of getting the disease.

However, antimalarial medication only reduces your risk of infection by about 90%, so taking steps to avoid bites is also important.

When takingantimalarial medication:

  • Make sure you get the right antimalarial tablets before you go– check with our pharmacist if you're unsure
  • Follow the instructions included with your tablets carefully
  • Depending on the type you're taking, continue to take your tablets for up to four weeks after returning from your trip to cover the incubation period of the disease.
